Al Roker Biography

Al Roker is an American weather forecaster, journalist, television personality, author, and actor. He is currently the weather anchor on NBC’s Today. Roker also works as a co-host on 3rd Hour Today, although the latter was not officially announced by NBC News. He is also the CEO of AlRokerEnt.

Roker attended Xavier High School in Manhattan. He later completed his graduation with B.A. in communications from the State University of New York at Oswego in 1976.

Al began his TV career when he joined WKYC-TV in 1978, a Cleveland-based NBC affiliate. He made regular appearances as a backup for programs on the channel, such as Sunrise and The Today Show on NBC News.  In 1985, he was named co-host of the annual NBC Christmas at the Rockefeller Center special, and eventually signed on for coverage of the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade and the Roses Parade Tournament. Roker received a career boost when Scott stepped down from The Today Show and recommended his protégé as his substitution.

In 1990, Al Roker started making appearances on different TV series when he gained broad exposure as NBC’s weekend weathercaster in the TV world. Moreover, in an episode of Another World, Al made his first cameo. In 1994 he played himself in Reading Rainbow, and Mad About You.

Al Roker joined The Today Show in January 1996. He has won more than a dozen Emmy Awards. Roker co-hosted The Weather Channel’s Wake Up with Al show from July 2009 through October 2015. In March 2019 he debuted a new pair of bright cobalt glasses by eyewear label Dom Vetro, and the Internet couldn’t stop talking about them. The Today cast dressed up as characters from The Peanuts Movie for Halloween in 2015.

Al Roker Books

Beginning in 2009, Roker co-authored a series of murder mysteries with Dick Lochte, featuring Billy Blessing, a celebrity chef who became an amateur detective. The Midnight Show Murders (2010), the second book in the series, was nominated for a Nero Award in 2011. The Morning Show Murders, also released in 2010, with Holly Robinson Peete in the lead role, was turned into the 2018 film Hallmark Movies and Mysteries.

In 2016, Roker and his wife, Deborah Roberts, released the non-fiction book Been There, Done That Family Wisdom for Modern Times.

Al Roker Cancer

Roker underwent a complete knee arthroplasty (replacement, or ‘TKA’) on his left knee on Thursday, June 7, 2001.  He underwent gastric bypass surgery in 2002 to lose weight, which he said he did after several diets failed. The New York Daily News confirmed he had fallen 100 pounds (45 kg) from his 320 lb (150 kg) figure eight months after the surgery. 

Al wrote in Never Goin ‘Back: Winning the Weight Loss Fight For Good, published in 2013, about his battle with weight loss. He had a back operation in 2005. In 2016, he underwent yet another knee replacement surgery. Roker underwent emergency carpal tunnel surgery in October 2018.

In September 2019, he had hip replacement surgery. In November 2020, he revealed he was diagnosed with prostate cancer in September 2020

So far, Al has received a variety of awards, such as the Outstanding Morning Program Daytime Emmy Award and the Outstanding First Class Special Daytime Emmy Award. In addition, in three consecutive years, 1997, 1998, and 1999, he also won a Daytime Emmy Award for the Outstanding Special Class Program.
