Billy Horschel Biography
Billy Horschel is an American professional golfer who currently plays on the PGA Tour. In September 2021, Horchel won the BMW PGA Championship by shooting a final-round 65, becoming his second European Tour Victory.
Horschel was born in Grant, Florida, and raised there. He went to Bayside High School in nearby Palm Bay. He obtained an athletic scholarship to attend the University of Florida, Gainesville, where he competed in National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) competition for coach Buddy Alexander’s Florida Gators men’s golf team from 2006 to 2009.
Billy was a four-time All-American, including three first-team selections, as well as the Southeastern Conference (SEC) player of the year in 2007 and 2009. Horschel was a PING Southeast All-Region pick in 2008. In 2009, he earned a bachelor’s degree in sport management from the University of Florida.
He represented the United States in the Palmer Cup twice, in 2007 and 2008, scoring 4.5 points each time. He has a 3–1 record with the Walker Cup-winning team in 2007.
Horschel won the individual medalist award at the 2006 U.S. Amateur, shooting a two-day score of 138 (60-78, 5) at Hazeltine National Golf Club in Chaska, Minnesota. Horschel began his professional career in 2009. In December 2009, he qualified for the 2010 PGA Tour through qualifying school. Horschel was limited to four PGA Tour events that year due to a wrist injury, and he did not make the cut in any of them. In December 2010, he regained his Tour Card through qualifying school to supplement his medical extension if he did not earn enough to secure his Tour Card.
In February 2011, he made the cut at the Mayakoba Golf Classic, his first PGA Tour appearance in eleven years, finishing T13. Horschel finished the season ranked 140th on the money list, earning him conditional eligibility for 2012. He received his PGA Tour Card for 2013 after his third successful try in four trips to Q School. He started his season by making the cut in every tournament he played in. Horschel won by one shot over D. A. Points after making six consecutive birdies in the fourth round. Horschel now sits third in the FedEx Cup standings, third in the PGA Tour money list, and 49th in the Official World Golf Ranking. By the end of April 2013, Horschel led the PGA Tour in consecutive cuts made with twenty-three, dating from the FedEx St. Jude Classic in June 2012. That streak ended when he missed the cut at The Players Championship, the tournament he played in after his win.
Horschel and Phil Mickelson were tied for first place during the halfway point of the 2013 U.S. Open. He was one of only two players under par after the second round of his first major as a professional, hitting all 18 of Merion’s greens in regulation. He fired rounds of 72–74 over the weekend to finish the tournament at five-over-par, four strokes behind eventual winner Justin Rose.
Horschel finished T4 in his first major as a pro, climbing to 34th in the world and fourth in the FedEx Cup standings. He won the 2014 BMW Championship for the second time and moved up to 23rd in the world rankings. Moreover, Billy won The Tour Championship and, with it, the FedEx Cup the following week at East Lake Golf Club. Horschel now sits 14th in the OWGR after his victory.
Horschel became a first-time father just two days after winning the Tour Championship and FedEx Cup. He defeated Jason Day in a playoff in May 2017 to win the AT&T Byron Nelson. Horschel and his playing partner Scott Piercy won the Zurich Classic of New Orleans in April 2018.
Horschel won the WGC-Dell Technologies Match Play in March 2021, defeating Scottie Scheffler in the final 2 & 1. This was his first victory in a World Golf Championship. Later in September 2021, he won the BMW PGA Championship with a final-round 65. It was his second victory on the European Tour.
