Brian Wilkes Biography
Brian Wilkes is the Chief meteorologist for Fox 59 since joining the station in July 1995. He is a holder of a Bachelor of Science degree in science communication from Columbia University. After college, Wilkes completed a two and half year internship at WGN-9 (Chicago), under Meteorologist Tom Skilling.
Brian’s interest in weather started when he was in fourth grade. Growing up on the far south side of Chicago, he faced the 1979 bizzard keep him out of school for two weeks. This ignited his love for weather, which has grown to date.
He is a member of the American Meteorological Society and the National Weather Association. In August 1996, Brian received his Seal of Approval from the National Weather Association.
Wilkes started his career as the chief meteorologist at his WSJV-TV, now the Fox affiliate in Elkhart, Indiana for their 6 and 10 pm newscasts. During his time at the station, Brian produced, wrote, and hosted a documentary on the Palm Sunday tornadoes that ripped through South Bend in April of 1965.
Moreover, Brian has received a number of honors throughout his time in Indianapolis. For his severe weather show ‘Blown Away,’ which he hosted and co-produced, he received an Emmy from the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences in 1996. He also won an Emmy in 2001 for two weather programs called ‘Ahead of the Storm.’
For Brian, it’s not business all the time. In 2001, he showed his playful side when he hosted and sang with his posses orchestra during the “Singin’, Swingin’ Holiday Special”, which featured several musical artists within Central Indiana. He also enjoys teaching, as he can be found visiting central Indiana schools throughout the year the time he’s not in front of the camera.
