Byju Raveendran Biography
Byju Raveendran is an famous Indian entrepreneur, investor and educator. He is the co-founded Byju’s app. His app is the first startup in Asia to be funded by Mark Zuckerberg and his wife’s foundation, The Chan-Zuckerberg Initiative. Raveendran has also received many awards including the Entrepreneur of the Year Award by Ernst & Young.
He was born and raised in Azhikode, Kannur, Kerala, India. He attended his high school at a Malayalam school and later enrolled himself in the Government College of Engineering. There he graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Technology. After that, he was hired at the multinational shipping company where he served as service engineer.
Raveendran also helped students to study for the CAT exam during his vacation period. In 2007 he founded the test preparation business called Byju’s Classes. The prgram grew day by day and finally into a stadium-size class. He also co-founded Byju’s app together with his wife, Divya Gokulnath, who he met while she was a student in his exam preparation class.

His popularity grew by the day, and, there was a time when he was taking a class of around 20,000 students across different states such as Delhi, Bangalore, Mumbai, Chennai, and Pune. Due to the increasing number of students, he started recording his lectures in 2009, and he made them available to students across 45 cities. The app which he founded is called Think & Learn which was aimed at creating educational content for students. In 2015, Byju’s account and iOS app had over 5.5 million downloads with more than 2.5 million subscribers.
At the end of the following year, Mark Zuckerberg and his Priscilla Chan’s organization- The Chan-Zuckerberg Invested in $50 Million funds in Raveendran’s company. Thereafter, the company became the first startup in Asia to be funded by the Chan-Zuckerberg Initiative. In July 2019, “The Learning App” became the official sponsor of the Indian Cricket Team jersey. That same year, Byju won the Manorama News Newsmaker award.
Moreover, he was also featured on the cover of Forbes India magazine in 2017. On top of that, Raveendran was also awarded the Entrepreneur of the Year Award by Ernst & Young. As of 2021, he brought the Indian test-prep provider Aakash Educational Services Ltd. for nearly US$1 billion. Later on, he invested $400 million in BYJU’S in his capacity to further increase his stake in the company.
