Bernstein went to school at Montgomery Blair High School in Silver Spring, Maryland. After high school, he joined the University of Maryland. He started his career at the age of 16 as a copyboy for The Washington Star. However, Carl dropped out of the University of Maryland to work full-time as a reporter.
In 1965, Carl joined Elizabeth Daily Journal in New Jersey as a full-time reporter. In addition, he won his first prize in New Jersey’s press association. The award was for his investigative reporting on the blackout of 1965 and the problems of teenage drinking.
In 1966, he joined the Washington Post as a metropolitan staff. He specialized in the police, court, and city hall assignments with a few self-assigned feature stories. Moreover, Carl made history when he uncovered the Watergate scandal that led to the resignation of U.S. President Richard Nixon.
Additionally, Carl together with Bob Woodward published a non-fiction book ”All the President’s Men” and wоn fоur Асаdеmу Аwаrdѕ. The book focused on the investigation of the first Watergate break-in and the ensuing scandal. Carl left Washington Post in 1977 and went to work for ABC News from 1980 to 1984.
Moreover, he went to Iraq to cover the event for the time Magazine in the special report in 1990. He revealed that discontent and hatred felt against Saddam Hussein and he was expelled from that country and he went to Egypt. In 1992, Carl wrote a cover story for The New Republic magazine.
In addition, Bernstein spoke at a rally of People’s Mujahedin of Iran in 2012. It was an opposition Iranian organization that had previously been listed as a Foreign Terrorist Organization by the United States. Some of the books he has аuthоrеd include, The Final Days, The Secret Man, His Holiness: John Paul II and the History of Our Time, as well as Loyalties.
Currently, Carl is a Visiting Presidential Professor at Stony Brook University and also a frequent political commentator on CNN. He is also a frequent guest and analyst on several television news programs.
