Bernstein went to school at Montgomery Blair High School in Silver Spring, Maryland. After high school, he joined the University of Maryland. He started his career at the age of 16 as a copyboy for The Washington Star. However, Carl dropped out of the University of Maryland to work full-time as a reporter.

In 1965, Carl joined Elizabeth Daily Journal in New Jersey as a full-time reporter. In addition, he won his first prize in New Jersey’s press association. The award was for his investigative reporting on the blackout of 1965 and the problems of teenage drinking.

In 1966, he joined the Washington Post as a metropolitan staff. He specialized in the police, court, and city hall assignments with a few self-assigned feature stories. Moreover, Carl made history when he uncovered the Watergate scandal that led to the resignation of U.S. President Richard Nixon.
