He claims to have become a Christian while at the University of Texas at Austin, where he was studying to be an oil and gas lawyer. He subsequently went to Peru to work as a missionary for ten years. Washer formed the Hearty Missionary Society in 1988, while in Peru, to encourage local missionaries who were testifying to people of their own culture.
