David Muir Biography

David Muir is an American journalist and an Emmy Award-winning anchor and correspondent working with the ABC News Tonight in New York. Earlier on, David served as the weekend anchor and principal substitute anchor on ABC’s World News with Diane Sawyer. He succeeded Diane Sawyer in September 2014.

He is also the ABC News magazine 20/20, part of the news department of the ABC broadcast-television network where he hosts with Amy Robach. Before his role in ABC, he was at Boston’s WCVB and Syracuse’s WTVH.

Muir served as an anchor and a reporter at WTVH-TV in Syracuse, New York between 1995-2000. After reporting from Jerusalem, Tel Aviv, Israel, and the Gaza Strip following the 1995 assassination of Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin, he was awarded top honors from the Radio-Television News Directors Association.

His associate press also honored him for Best Enterprise Reporting and Best Television Interview. The Syracuse Press Club also didn’t lag behind. It recognized Muir as the anchor of the “Best Local Newscast”, and he was voted one of the “Best Local News Anchors” in Syracuse.

From 2000 to 2003, Muir worked as an anchor and a reporter for WCVB television in Boston. In this period, he won the regional Edward R Murrow Award for investigative journalism. He also won the National Headliner Award and Associated Press honors. This was attributed to his work tracing the path of the hijackers involved in the attacks of September 11, 2001. He was also recognized by the Associated Press due to his news-anchoring and reporting.

David graduated from Onondaga Central Junior-Senior High School in May 1991. He then enrolled at the Park School of Communications at Ithaca College in Ithaca, New York, graduating with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Journalism in May 1995.

While still in college, Muir also attended the Institute on Political Journalism at the Fund for American Studies at Georgetown University. Similarly, he studied at the University of Salamanca in Spain along with the Institute for the International Education of Students.

Muir became an anchor of ABC News overnight, program World News Now, in August 2003. He also rose to an anchor of ABC News’ early morning newscast World News This Morning (America This Morning).

From June 2007, David was the telecaster of World News Saturday. In the year 2006, and occasionally thereafter, David co-anchored the news-magazine Prime-time.

In February 2012, Muir became the anchor for the weekend newscasts, and the broadcast was named World News with David Muir. He has silently got credit with a rise in the ratings of the weekend evening broadcasts. Later in March 2013, Muir was credited to co-anchor ABC’s 20/20 with Elizabeth Vargas.
