Dean Richards Biography
Dean Richards is an American Emmy Award-winning entertainment reporter and film critic for WGN-TV and a longtime radio host for WGN (AM) in Chicago. He joined the WGN team in 1991where his work has been heard on WGN, cable channel News Nation and many of the 200 Nexstar Media Group properties. Richards was cited in a New York Times front-page article as the company’s “Man of Many Hats.”
Dean graduated from Columbia College with a broadcast degree in Communications/Marketing. A Chicago native, Richards is a veteran of Chicago’s broadcasting scene since 1975, working at WNUA, WCLR, WIND, WCFL, WFYR, WPWR, and WFLD.

In 1998, Dean appeared as a guest reviewer at WGN and was brought on board as a regular contributor soon after. His interviews with national and local celebrities, reports on showbiz, and reviews of the latest movies are seen on WGN’s newscasts, such as the #1 rated “WGN Morning News”, the “WGN Midday News,” as well as on Nexstar Media Group stations nationwide.
In addition, his reviews and interviews are also seen on the national cable channel “News Nation.” Richards is a former writer for the Chicago Tribune and RedEye. In 2016, he was introduced to the Chicago Chapter of the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences’ Silver Circle. Later in 2017, he was honored with the Chicago International Television Festival’s Chicago Award.
Moreover, he has hosted and co-produced specials such as the award-winning “Bozo, Gar & Ray: WGN TV Classics,” the Oscar preview special “The Envelope Please,” “Stories of Hope: Facing Breast Cancer,” “Unforgettable: Living with Alzheimer’s,” “Chicago’s Summer Blast,” “Family Classics” and “Bozo’s Circus: The 1960s.”
Richards also hosts “Dean Richards’ Sunday Morning” on WGN Radio (720 AM). This is a program that covers Chicago’s entertainment and lifestyle scene including movies, theater, food, and dining, Sundays from 9 am-1 pm. His entertainment reports and reviews can also be heard on “The Bob Sirott Morning Show” weekdays between 8:10-8:30 am.
Dean has won over 30 local and national awards for programming and production since joining WGN Radio in 1994. The awards include the Peter Lisagor Award for Outstanding Journalism, the Associated Press Best Feature of the Year, the Illinois Broadcasters Association, UPI, Chicago A.I.R. Awards, and Promax International Promotion and Marketing Awards.
In 2016, Richards was admitted to the WGN Radio Walk of Fame, which pays tribute to the station’s legendary talent. His radio and television specials on the fight against breast cancer have also won many national and local awards and citations from breast cancer organizations. He also hosted a nationally syndicated morning radio program for the ABC Radio Network while still its Operations Manager.
