He started playing basketball at a very young age under the guidance of his father who was a former basketball player. His interest in sports showed while he was in eighth grade when he stood 6 feet and 4 inches tall.
Additionally, he played high school basketball as a freshman at Rancho Christian School in Temecula, California. While he was a junior, he averaged 19.2 points, 10.4 rebounds, and 4.7 blocks per game. Due to this, he was named California Gatorade Player of the Year and the Press-Enterprise Player of the Year. In his senior, he averaged 20.5 points 12.2 rebounds, 5.2 blocks, and 4.6 assists per game.
