Gene Lavanchy Biography
Gene Lavanchy is an American radio and television personality who currently co-hosts the Morning News at WFXT Boston 25 in Boston. He was born in Boston, Massachusetts, and grew up in Walpole, Massachusetts. Gene received a Bachelor of Science degree in Mass Communication from Emerson College in 1986. He began his broadcasting career in 1983 at WJCC-AM radio in Norfolk, Massachusetts as a sports writer and producer.
He got his start in TV news in 1986, covering sports at WBBH-TV in Fort Myers, Florida. In addition, he was a sports anchor at WLNE-TV in Providence Rhode Island, and host of ESBK-TV’s Boston Bruins telecasts.
Coming onto the news scene in 1993 with WHDH in Boston, he became its sports director and anchor in 1994. As time went by, he hosted the station’s “Sports Xtra” Sunday late-night sports program. In this program, he would interview and also discuss current topics with many local New England sports stars.
After leaving WHDH, he arrived at WFXT in August 2003. He led one of Boston’s most popular morning shows with Kim Carrigan who has also left WHDH. In addition, he featured his own English Wikipedia article page on WFXT’s Morning News on December 17, 2007.
In his professional career journey, Lavanchy has won a good number of awards. He won the UPU award for overall sports coverage in 1988 and received the 1991 AP award for best sports feature. Additionally, he was named “Best Sports Anchor” by Boston magazine’s annual “Best of Boston” Awards.
