Harry Shum Jr. is an American dancer, actor, and choreographer who rose to fame for playing Mike Chang’s role on a FOX TV series called Glee and Magnus Bane on Free Form’s fantasy series called Shadowhunters. He also gained more fame and popularity by playing Benson Kwan’s role on ABC’s Grey’s Anatomy (since 2022). Chum has also been nominated for six Screen Actors Guild awards for the best ensemble cast on shows like Crazy Rich Asians and Everything Everywhere All At Once. Shum was born in Limon Costa Rica to Chinese Immigrants but he was raised in San Francisco, California. Therefore, he grew up learning how to fluently speak Spanish and Cantonese. Harry also grew up as a very talented kid who enjoyed dancing and performing from a very young age. He studied at San Luis Obispo County but he graduated from Arroyo Grande High School back in 2000. He then enrolled at San Francisco State University but he dropped out. Chum dropped out of the University during his third year to pursue a career in dancing.
Harry began his career by moving to Los Angeles, California, and working with great choreographers like Rosero McCoy and Jamal Sims. He even went on a UK tour as a backup dancer for a famous American singer called Kaci. Chum was focused on building his career as a male dancer. Therefore, he began appearing on BET’s Comic View and Apple’s famous dancing show called Dancing Silhouettes.

In 2004, he was able to join Missy Elliot, Beyonce, and Alicia Keys as a Backup dancer for their co-headlining tour called Ladies First. He also worked as a backup dancer for Jennifer Lopez and Mariah Carey before making his acting debut.
Shum made his acting debut by starring in Step Up 2 and its following third part called Step Up 3D. From there, Harry landed his breakthrough role as Mike Chang on Glee. He played the role from 2009 to 2015. His Mike Chang role earned him fame and attention from both local and international audiences. During this time, Harry balanced his acting career with his career as a male dancer.
Shum even got the chance to showcase his singing and dancing abilities on Glee by performing various songs like Make Em Laugh and doing a duet with a co-star on a song called Valerie. Shum even worked with dance groups like The LXD and So You Think You Dance before landing another major role on TV.
In 2015, Harry was announced as the main supporting character of FreeForm’s fantasy Series Shadowhunters alongside Emarude Toubia, Lola Flanery, and an ensemble cast. He played the role of a bisexual high warlock of the Shadow world called Magnus Bane from 2015 to 2018. Shum won the Best Bisexual Representation award in 2017 and the Male TV Star award in 2018 for his Magnus Bane role.
