Irika Sargent Biography
Irika Sargent is an American Emmy award-winning journalist who currently co-anchors for CBS 2 Chicago as a weekday evening newscast at 5 p.m. and 6 p.m. together with Brad Edwards. Sargent joined the CBS 2 team in 2015, just immediately after resigning from WFOR-TV in Miami.
Sargent kicked off her career with KOMU-TV NBC in Columbia, where she served as a reporter for the evening newscast at WPMI-TV in Mobile. She also worked for KPRC TV and WPMI TV news networks.
Irika attended and graduated from the University of Missouri with a Bachelor’s degree in Journalism. She also attended Cornell Law School and earned a degree in Juris Doctor since she wanted to gain legal insight and expertise that could assist her in coverage. She studied law for four years and graduated in 2016.
Additionally, while she was studying law, she was an editor for the Cornell Journal of Law and Public Policy. Moreover, Irika was a writer as well as an editor for the Legal Information Institute, focusing on cases before the U.S. Supreme Court.
Irika began her career in 2000 as a reporter and anchor at the NBC affiliate KOMU-TV in Columbia. She served the station for around two years before leaving to join the London Bureau of NBC News. Irika worked for NBC News for several years before leaving.
From 2006 to 2010, Sargent practiced labor and employment law for four years at New York City’s Greenberg Traurig law firm. She represented clients in New York federal and state courts as well as provided free legal services to needy ones. Later on, she went back to her journalism career as a legal show anchor in 2010 for the NBC affiliate WPMI-TV in Alabama.

Furthermore, Irika bagged the position of a weekend news anchor at KPRC-TV in Houston, Texas, in 2011. Luckily, Sargent won several Emmy Awards alongside her colleagues for the coverage of the deadly West Texas fertilizer plant explosion and received the award in 2014.
Later on, she became the weekend anchor of the 5 pm and 11 pm news at WFOR-TV until 2015. At the station, Irika hosted the public affairs show Focus on South Florida and the news segment Legally Speaking. In 2015, Sargent joined CBS 2 Chicago as a weekend news anchor, bringing the 5 p.m., 6 p.m., and 10 p.m. news. Currently, Irika anchors the CBS 2 Chicago weekday evening news together with Brad Edwards.
Despite her career in journalism and law, Sargent is involved in helping many non-profit organizations such as the Shriver National Cameron Poverty Law, Habitat for Humanity, the American Red Cross, 100 Black Men of Chicago, and the American Cancer Society.
