Jawan Strader Biography

Jawan Strader is an Emmy Award-winning American journalist who presently works for NBC 6 as an anchor and host. He and Jackie Nespral co-anchor NBC 6 News weeknights at 5, 6, and 11 p.m. Strader also hosts Voices with Jawan Strader, a community affairs program focused on the black community and the underprivileged.

Jawan is a well-known news figure in South Florida. He comes to the anchor desk with more than 20 years of experience in journalism, having covered some of the biggest and most influential stories in South Florida and around the country.

Jawan is known for getting right to the heart of breaking news stories, especially those that have an impact on South Florida. Strader received an Emmy Award in 2018 for his coverage of the tragic Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School shooting and the Hollywood Hills nursing home incident, in which 12 seniors died following Hurricane Irma.

Jawan was also the sole South Florida anchor on the scene when a church was shot up in Charleston, South Carolina. Strader was in Orlando the day after the terrorist shooting at Pulse nightclub, speaking with the victims and sharing their tales with viewers. He was also in Havana, Cuba, to cover former President Barack Obama’s historic visit.

Jawan is from Indianapolis, Indiana, but has lived in South Florida for the past ten years. His profession has taken him from South Bend, Indiana, to Tulsa, Austin, Washington D.C., Cleveland, and Miami.

Strader earned a bachelor’s degree in journalism and speech communication from Indiana University. In 2012, he joined WTVJ/NBC 6. Jawan previously worked at the local CBS station as a weekend anchor, a 10 p.m. anchor, and a morning anchor, as well as hosting a community affairs show.

Strader has also received a number of Emmys, including one for anchoring. He was also named the Best News Anchor by the Miami New Times in 2018. In 2016, he won the CCNN Live Media Excellence Award for Best News Anchor.

Jawan is also well-known in the community for his dedication and hard work. He was given a special award for media coverage of public education by the Miami-Dade Education Fund. Jawan was designated one of South Florida’s most powerful and influential black persons by Legacy magazine.

Strader is a mentor to a number of young journalists and a role model for 5000 role models of excellence, member of the National Association of Black journalists, 100 Black Men of South Florida, and Kappa Alpha PSI Fraternity, Inc.

Jawan is also a motivational speaker who has encouraged students and staff from various businesses in South Florida to believe in themselves and conquer challenges. He believes strongly in mentoring and assisting others. Strader acknowledges his mother’s strong foundation as a single parent for helping him overcome challenges.
