Jay Bakker Biography
Jay Bakker is a renowned American pastor, author, and speaker. He is the son of televangelist Jim Bakker and Tammy Faye Bakker Messner of Prophetic End Time News show. In 1988, when Jay was just 12 years old, his father Jim was charged with eight counts of mail fraud, 15 counts of wire fraud, and one count of conspiracy. This made him spent six years in federal prison.
The trauma from his father’s imprisonment and the subsequent by other Christians in the church and religious community led the young Jay to engage in substance abuse and partying at an early age.
Later on, Bakker became disillusioned with mainstream Christianity, becoming critical of Christian fundamentalism and the Christian right. He then became a much more liberal Christian and co-founded Revolution Church in 1994 in Phoenix, Arizona.
Jay then preached at Revolution’s Atlanta location before evangelizing the New York City branch of Revolution Church. While here, Bakker held services at the bar and venue Pete’s Candy store in the Williamsburg section of Brooklyn.

In 2013, Baker relocated to Minneapolis to evangelize in another iteration of Revolution Church. However, much of Jay’s story was detailed in a 2006 documentary on Sundance channel; One Punk Under God: The Prodigal Son of Jim and Tammy Faye. In addition, he has been featured in Time Magazine.
As an author, Bakker has written the book; Son of a Preacher: My Search for Grace in the Shadows. This is an autobiography that details his youth, his relationship with his parents, his scandals, and the founding of the Revolution Church.
In 2011, he co-authored Martin Edlund’s book; Fall to Grace: A revolution of God, Self, and Society. This book explores the radical, transformation, and Inner nature of grace, challenging Christians to reassess their understanding of salvation. It further encourages non-believers to see Jesus with fresh eyes.
