Jay Bilas Biography
Jay Scot Bilas is an American college basketball analyst who presently works for ESPN. Bilas is a practicing attorney in North Carolina and a former professional basketball player and coach who played for and assisted Mike Krzyzewski at Duke University.
Bilas was a consensus Top 50 recruit in 1982, averaging 23.5 points and 13.5 rebounds per game at Rolling Hills High School in Rolling Hills Estates, California. The Long Beach Press-Telegram selected Bilas First Team All-CIF, First Team All-South Bay, MVP of the Bay League, and Best in the West that season.
From 1982 to 1986, Jay was a four-year starter for Mike Krzyzewski’s Duke University men’s basketball team. He helped the Blue Devils to the Final Four and National Championship game in 1986. Bilas, Johnny Dawkins, Mark Alarie, and David Henderson, Krzyzewski’s 1982 recruiting class, are still the greatest scoring single class in college basketball history. Bilas finished his college career with 1,062 points and 692 rebounds while shooting over 55% from the field.
Jay was a member of the United States National Select Team that competed in the Jones Cup in Taipei, Taiwan, in 1985. Bilas earned a bachelor’s degree in political science and was drafted by the Dallas Mavericks in the fifth round of the 1986 NBA Draft. He played professionally in the 2nd Division of Italy and the 1st Division of Spain.

Between 1990 to 1992, Bilas worked as an assistant coach at Duke under Mike Krzyzewski. Bilas earned his J.D. degree in 1992 while working as an assistant coach at Duke University School of Law. Duke reached three Final Fours and won two National Championships during his three years as an assistant coach.
Bilas continues to teach and speak at clinics and has served as an instructor at the Nike Skills Academy in Beaverton, Oregon, the Nike/Amar’e Stoudemire Skills Academy in Phoenix, Arizona, and the Nike/LeBron James Skills Academy in Akron, Ohio, where some of the best high school and college players in the country are annually tutored.
Jay was one of 12 coaches who led United States Service teams in tournament action in the Middle East during Operation Hardwood I and II in 2005 and 2006. Mark Gottfried, Kelvin Sampson, Tubby Smith, Tom Izzo, Rick Barnes, Gary Williams, Bobby Cremins, Dave Odom, Bobby Lutz, Mike Jarvis, Jim Crews, Billy Lange, and Reggie Minton were among the other coaches involved in Operation Hardwood I and II.
Since 1995, Jay has worked for ESPN as a color commentator and studio analyst. In 1993, Bilas began his broadcasting career with the Duke Radio Network, where he provided color commentary with play-by-play man Bob Harris. Bilas began his career as a college basketball analyst for ESPN in 1995, both on the field and in the studio.
Since 2000, he has co-hosted ESPN studio broadcasts with Rece Davis, Hubert Davis, Digger Phelps, and Bob Knight, including College GameNight and College GameDay.
