Jim Gardner Biography
Jim Gardner is a renowned American news anchor for WPVI-TV in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania where he works as the station’s 6:00 PM and 11:00 PM weekday newscaster. Prior to starting his television career at WKBW in Buffalo Springs in 1974, Jim worked at all-news WINS Radio in New York and WFAS Radio in White Plains, New York.
Gardner received his Bachelor of Arts degree from Columbia University in 1970. He first got a taste of broadcast journalism when he reported on the historic student riots at Columbia in 1968. After his graduation in 1970, Jim worked at the all-news WINS Radio in New York.
On June 1, 1976, Jim joined WPVI-TV in Philadelphia as a reporter and anchor of Action News at noon. Subsequently, he was promoted to work as an anchor of Action News at 6 p.m. and 11 p.m. on May 11, 1977.
After working for the network for more than four decades, Jim anchored his last regularly scheduled 11 pm broadcast on January 11, 2022. However, you can still find Jim anchoring Action News at 6 p.m. until his retirement at the end of the year.
It would not be possible to highlight Jim’s local, national and international coverages although most of his stories stand out. He has done so much that we will spend the whole day expounding on his achievements. Gardner is only proud of his longevity and consistency, working at 6 and 11 days in and day out for over four decades.
Jim values his community involvement and his ability to give back to a variety of organizations. Particularly, he is proud that one broadcast journalism student at Temple University has been awarded the Jim Gardner Scholarship to help pay for his or her education every year since 1987.
