Rosenfield began his profession after graduating from Duke University in 1981. He began his career as a general assignment reporter at WTVD-TV in Durham, North Carolina. Jim then went to KTRK-TV in Houston, where he worked as a reporter and then an anchor. He eventually relocated to Chicago, where he worked at WLS-TV as a reporter and weekend anchor. In 1998, he relocated to New York and began working for WCBS-TV, where he co-anchored the noon newscast with Cindy Hsu and the 5 p.m. program with Lisa Cooley.
After a contract disagreement with WCBS, he moved to competitor station WNBC-TV, where he co-anchored the 5 p.m. broadcast (“Live at Five”) with Sue Simmons. He departed WNBC in 2005 and returned to WCBS in June of that year to take over for Ernie Anastos, who had left WCBS for a five-year, $10 million contract at WNYW-TV. He was one of Dianne Doctor’s new hires at WNBC, where he had previously worked. Rosenfield was able to become a lead male anchor at a local New York station as a result of this move, which he would not have been able to do if he had stayed at WNBC.
