Joe Johns is an American journalist and lawyer who is currently the Senior Washington Correspondent for CNN, based in the Washington, D.C., bureau. Johns was promoted to this position in 2014. He comes to CNN from NBC News where he worked as a Capitol Hill correspondent for TODAY and other NBC programs. He also worked for WRC-TV/ NBC4 in Washinton.
Born in the United States, he attended West High School where he was a star discus thrower. He then attended and graduated from Marshall University with a bachelor of arts degree in political science. He also received a law degree from American University.
After graduating, he began his career at WSAZ-TV in Huntington in 1980. He then moved to WSOC-TV in Charlotte where he was a reporter. Joe first came to Washington in 1983 when he joined WRC-TV, an NBC affiliate where his reporting won him an Emmy. He was among the NBC Nightly News team to receive an Edward R. Murrow Award for his “Beltway Sniper” reporting.
Prior to joining CNN, he covered events on Capitol Hill, the White House, and the Pentagon for more than 10 years with NBC. Currently, he is CNN’s senior Washington Correspondent. He is responsible for covering a wide range of political and breaking news stories for the network.
