John Kirby Biography
John Kirby is a retired rear admiral in the United States who worked as the United States Department of Defense’s Press Secretary. He was also the assistant secretary of Defense for Public Affairs. Previously, he worked as a military and diplomatic analyst for CNN. During the Obama administration, John was the spokesperson for the United States Department of State.
Kirby started his career in 1986 as a surface warfare officer. Later, he was positioned as a public affairs officer. Before John became the Commander of US naval forces in Europe, he was the chief of the Navy’s flagship monthly magazine. Later, John became the chief of Naval operations and a special assistant for public affairs to the chairman of the Joint chief of staff.
In 2013, he was appointed to be the Pentagon Press Secretary and later the Rear admiral position. He retired from the military after working as the spokesperson for the US Department of State. Recently, during Biden’s administration, John was appointed as the Pentagon Press Secretary for the second time.
Kirby attended Saint Petersburg Catholic High School and later enrolled at the University of South Florida in Tampa, Florida. Here, he graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in History. Later, he graduated with a Master’s degree in international relations from Troy University. He graduated with a Master of Arts in national security and strategic studies from the Naval War College.
