Kristen Clarke is an Afro-American Attorney General currently serving as the assistant for the Civil Rights Division at the United States Department of Justice, Washington D.C, Baltimore Area since 2021 May. Previously, she was the President and the Executive Director of the Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights Under Law, Washington D.C. In addition, she was also the Chief of the Civil Rights Bureau of the New York State Attorney General’s Office.

Clarke was a member of Prep for Prep. She was awarded the 2017 Choate Rosemary Hall Alumni. Nevertheless, she graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree from Harvard University in 1997. At the institute, she was the president of the Black Student’s Association. In addition, Kristen got a Juris Doctor from Columbia Law School in 2000. Afterward, she served as a trial attorney and a federal prosecutor in the Civil Rights Division of the U.S. Department of Justice.

Kristen was selected by President Joe Biden as the head of her current department on May 25th, 2021 through nomination by a vote of 51-48. She is the first woman to lead the Civil Rights Division. Nevertheless, Clarke was also the Co-Director of the political participation group NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund Inc. Clarke is also the first Afro-American woman student body president of American University who fought against racism in her lawsuit against Andrew Anglin for the United States District Court of Columbia.

Clarke has also appeared with Stacey Abrams in the documentary All In: The Fight for Democracy where she handled legal arguments and advocated the passage of the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act. She also sued the U.S. Postal Service due to delayed ballots during the COVID pandemic. She also fought for the LGBTQ where she secured an agreement with the Boy Scouts of America to end their policy of excluding openly gay adults from serving as leaders in organizations.

In addition, she is the recipient of the 2010 Paul Robeson Distinguished Alumni Award issued by Columbia Law School. Clarke also received the National Black Law Students Association Alumni of the Year 2010. In 2011 she was named Top 40 Lawyers Under 40 by the National Bar Association. Kristen also bagged the Best Brief Award in 2012 issued by the National Association of Attorneys General.

Nevertheless, in 2015 she was the New York Law Journal Rising Star. Clarke also bagged the Alumni Award issued by Choate Rosemary Hall in 2017. Moreover, she bagged the 2018 Louis L. Redding Lifetime Achievement Award issued by the Delaware Barrister Association. Lastly, she received the Thurgood Marshall Award in 2017 issued by Quinnipiac Law School.
