Kumail Ali Nanjiani is a Pakistani-American stand-up comedian and actor. He is recognized for his role as Dinesh in the HBO comedy series Silicon Valley as well as in the film The Big Sick. As a writer, he and his wife were awarded the Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay. In addition, Ali is also known for his appearance in other films such as Franklin & Bash, Newsreaders, Portlandia, and Eternals.
He was born and raised in Karachi, Sindh, Pakistan. He graduated from St. Michael’s Convent School for his O-Levels and later enrolled at Karachi Grammar School, where he finished with an A-Level. Thereafter, he moved to the US to further his study at Grinnell College in Grinnell, Iowa. There he graduated with a double major in computer science and philosophy in 2001. After that, Kumain moved to Chicago and performed his first stand-up comedy at open-mic events.
Nanjiani began his professional career in 2007 when he wrote and starred in an n original autobiographical one-man show in Chicago, New York, and Los Angeles. While in New York, he did stand-up performances in venues such as Have Issues, The Colbert Report, and Michael & Michael. After that, he performed at the Just for Laughs comedy festival. A few months later, during the COVID-19 pandemic, Nanjiani and his wife Emily launched a podcast, Staying In with Emily and Kumail. The series chronicles their experiences as a couple forced to live in isolation during the global pandemic. Most recently, Ali starred in the Marvel Cinematic Universe film Eternals, as Kingo. In 2022, Nanjiani starred in the leading role of Somen Banerjee in the Hulu miniseries Welcome to Chippendales film. For his upcoming movies, Ali is expected to appear in the untitled Ghostbusters: Afterlife sequel.
