Laura Velasquez is a renowned American broadcaster and award-winning meteorologist for AccuWeather, based in State College, Pennsylvania where she analyzes weather patterns using her graphic media skills. Velasquez works with a skilled team of over 10 meteorologists and also graphic artists to ensure everything pertaining to weather is ready for the early show.
Laura’s passion for weather started when she was 5 years old. Even at Kindergarten, Laura’s first choice in television programming was always weather-related. She was always thrilled to watch the impact severe weather would cause. Laura attended Jenison High School and later pursued her B.S. in Meteorology, Maths, and Geographic Science from Central Michigan University (2004-2008). Later in 2011, Laura joined Mississippi State University and graduated with a Master’s degree in Applied Meteorology in 2015.
In addition, Velasquez obtained the prestigious Certified Broadcast Meteorologist designation from the American Meteorological Society along with the Television Seal of Approval from the National Weather Association. She is also a member of both organizations.

After completing her degree from Central Michigan University and Mississippi State University, Velasquez started work at WOOD-TV in August 2007. After spending almost 7 years at the station, Laura moved to Denver, Colorado, and joined KDVR/KWGN where she served as a meteorologist between July 2014 and August 2015. Laura then joined AccuWeather. While in Michigan, Laura was recognized by the Michigan Association of Broadcasters earning the title “Best Weathercast.”
Outside her normal working routine, Laura is an avid runner and endurance athlete. Notably, Velasquez has completed four marathons and will run her fifth in Chicago this October. The Cherry Creek Trail, Wash Park, and the trails at Red Rocks have already become favorites of hers. Moreover, she is looking forward to climbing a few 14-ers in the not-so-distant future and is ready to learn how to ski “the right way” on the slopes of the Rockies.
