Laural Porter Biography

Laural Porter is an American journalist who has won multiple Emmy Awards and is currently the host of Straight Talk on KGW News in Portland, Oregon. She presently works at the station as a weeknight news anchor and reporter. Porter also co-anchors KGW News at 11 a.m. and hosts KGW’s Saturday evening current affairs show Straight Talk, which airs at 6.30 p.m.

At the 2015 Northwest Regional Emmy Awards, Laural was named Best Host/Moderator of Straight Talk. In her winning application, she included exclusive interviews with former Oregon Governor John Kitzhaber, who was criticized for the failing Cover Oregon health insurance exchange and a dispute involving his girlfriend, Cylvia Hayes. In 2015, Porter and Kurt Austin received the Edward R. Murrow Award for Feature Reporting as regional winners. In their award-winning piece, Jeff Daly’s search for his long-lost sister, Molly, who had been institutionalized in the 1950s, was highlighted. Porter and Austin’s reporting over a decade documented Jeff and Molly’s reunion and, eventually, their final heartbreaking parting.

In addition, in 2011, she received the renowned national Edward R. Murrow award for feature reporting. She was honored by the Mental Health Association with a national award for her coverage of mental health topics. She has also won six Emmy awards in the northwest region and a western regional Associated Press award for feature reporting in 2012. She’s won multiple accolades from the Society of Professional Journalism, the Associated Press, and the Oregon Association of Broadcasters, as well as numerous prizes while reporting and anchoring in Idaho.

One of the high points of her career came in February 2015, when she was invited to the White House to interview President Obama about trade difficulties. She was the first Oregon anchor, and one of only four in the country, to meet with President Obama and members of his Cabinet before reporting live from the White House. Laural was invited to moderate an interfaith panel discussion at the University of Portland in 2013 with His Holiness, the Dalai Lama. His Holiness also gave Laural a traditional Tibetan Khata, a mark of respect and gratitude, as a mark of respect and gratitude.

Laural is passionate about this subject. Her mother-in-law is a breast cancer survivor, and she recently lost her stepmother to the disease.

She is currently volunteering with the Achon Uganda Children’s Fund to assist children who have been orphaned as a result of the civil war in Northern Uganda, as well as to help improve the quality of life for residents in the region. She became involved after reporting about Julius Achon, a former Ugandan Olympic runner who now lives in Beaverton.
