Lucy Kafanov is a Russian-American journalist who is currently working as a CNN correspondent based in Denver. Prior to joining CNN, Lucy worked at NBC News as a Foreign Correspondent. She is best known for being the first Russian-American journalist to get access to a newly formed Russia’s Arctic Military Brigade.

Kafanov joined CNN in 2019 after almost a decade of working abroad as a foreign correspondent around the globe. In her career, she has reported from more than 50 countries including Afghanistan, Egypt, Iraq, Lebanon, Myanmar, the Korean Peninsula, Pakistan, Russia, Turkey, Venezuela, and Yemen.

At CNN, Lucy has covered a wide range of stories ranging from the coronavirus pandemic; ongoing nationwide protests and civil unrest sparked by the death of George Floyd; the devastating impact of climate change, and record-breaking wildfires in the West; to the 2020 U.S. Presidential Election.

Moreover, in 2016, Lucy joined NBC News as a foreign correspondent based in London. She reported for the TODAy Show, Nightly News, and MSNBC. While working at the station, Lucy reported on terrorist incidents across Europe; covered the battle against ISIS from Iraq; covered the Korean nuclear crisis from the Korean Peninsula and in 2017. She also became the first American journalist to get access to Russia’s newly-formed Arctic Military Brigade.

Her first assignment on NBC News took her on board a U.S. Navy P-3 Orion as it looked for missing EgyptAir Flight MS804. A few months later, Lucy became one of the first reporters to be on the scene in Amatrice after the deadly earthquake nearly wiped out the Italian town in 2016.

Since then, Kafanov has reported on most major international news stories ranging from terrorist attacks in Paris and London and elsewhere in Europe, to Brexit, to the crisis in Iraq and Syria.

Prior to joining NBC News, Kafanov worked as an independent multimedia reporter and foreign correspondent. She also worked in Instabul as a freelance journalist, reporting predominantly on the Middle East, Afghanistan, Pakistan, and Russia. Lucy often contributed words and photographs from Turkey, the Middle East, and Europe for outlets including the Christian Science Monitor, Newsweek, VICE News, Al Jazeera, Vocativ, and USA Today.

In 2016, Lucy was awarded an International Reporting Project fellowship grant for an in-depth investigative reporting project in Myanmar. Additionally, her report on Pakistani civilian victims of drone strikes in the tribal areas was highly praised by the Association for International Broadcasting global media excellence awards.

In addition, in 2015, Lucy was the recipient of a grant from the IWMF’s Howard G. Buffett Fund for Women Journalists. In 2016, she was awarded a fellowship in religion reporting by the International Reporting Project (IRP), supported by the Henry Luce Foundation.

Before moving abroad, Lucy worked as covered Washington politics as a print reporter on Capitol Hill. She later worked as a television producer for the PBS NewsHour with Jim Lehrer. Kafanov is a proud Magna Cum Laude and Phi Beta Kappa graduate from George Washington University.
