Mari Payton Biography
Mari Payton is an American journalist who is currently working as a senior investigative reporter at NBC7. She also anchors the station’s Weekend News and her stories have promoted local, state, and federal investigations. In addition, she is a contributor to the award-winning NBC7 Insight Investigative podcast.
Throughout her career, she has received numerous awards including Emmy awards for her investigative stories and her live reports. She has also received awards from the Society of Professional Journalists and the Press Club. In addition, she won the Associated Press Award for a piece on the obesity epidemic in the state of Mississippi.
Prior to working in San Diego, she worked at WLBT, the NBC affiliate in Jackson, Mississippi. While there, she was set to the Mississippi Gulf Coast, where she rode out the storm and covered the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. Following her education, she was a Renaissance Scholar and graduated from the Annenberg School for Communication.
Currently, she is s member of the Asian American Journalists Association and Investigative Reporters and Editors. When off her duties, she loves spending time with her two young kids and trying out new restaurants.
