Matt Rivers is a renowned American journalist and is currently the international correspondent for CNN based in Mexico City. He joined CNN in 2015 from CBS 3 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, where he worked as a reporter. Rivers has also worked at KSAT-TV in San Antonio, Texas; and KTSM-TV in El Paso, Texas.

He has reported on a number of important stories, including the ongoing COVID-19 crisis in Mexico and Brazil. He spent several weeks this year reporting on the country’s collapsing healthcare system and vaccine rollout delays, as well as the immigration debate on the US-Mexico border.

He spoke with ex-detainees and camp workers who accuse the Chinese government of torturing detainees while subjecting them to political indoctrination.

China went to great lengths to thwart CNN’s investigation, harassing Rivers inside his hotel, erecting impromptu roadblocks on major highways, and following the team around on the ground.


Matt was granted unusual access to Myanmar in 2018 while reporting on the Rohingya refugee crisis for CNN and visiting areas of Rakhine State. Rivers also spoke with the wives of Reuters journalists Wa Lone and Kyaw Soe Oo, who were arrested and imprisoned in Myanmar.

Rivers has covered major breaking stories around the world since joining CNN in 2015, including the rescue of 12 boys and their coach from Thailand’s Tham Luang cave and the Sulawesi earthquake and tsunami, which devastated the Indonesian city of Palu.
