Matt Wintz is an Emmy Award-winning meteorologist who currently works for WKYC-TV in Cleveland, Ohio as a meteorologist Monday through Thursday at 5 p.m., 7 p.m., and Sunday at 6 p.m. and 11 p.m.
Wintz was born and raised in Jefferson, in the middle of Ashtabula County’s Northeast Ohio Snowbelt. In 2006, he received his Bachelor of Science in Meteorology from The Ohio State University. He also holds a geography bachelor’s degree from Birmingham Southern College. When he was three years old, Matt became interested in the weather. He spent much of his time watching the Weather Channel while the rest of the kids were watching cartoons, and he claims he was staring at the radar and satellites.
Furthermore, his enthusiasm for weather grew with each lake effect snow event and summer thunderstorm. He claims to have been studying and observing Northeast Ohio weather for over thirty years. He began his broadcast career as the head meteorologist at WYIN, a PBS affiliate in Chicago, where he worked for six years. Later, he worked as a chief meteorologist for three years at WLTZ, an NBC station in Columbus, Georgia. Wintz has also worked as an intern for Ohio News Network and WICU 12 News.
In the Deep South, Matt got crucial severe weather forecasting experience. He asserts that “During my tenure, we had more than 60 tornadoes in my viewing area, and I’m glad to announce that none of them resulted in injuries or deaths. My top responsibility is keeping families safe during severe storms, which we accomplished by providing nonstop tornado coverage on TV and on Facebook Live.”
Furthermore, Matt and his family are overjoyed and grateful to be back in Cleveland. He declares, “This is the stuff of dreams. In school, I used to make forecasts on the chalkboard for my teachers, and now the same teachers and mentors may watch my forecast on television. It’s bizarre.” He also enjoys running and chugging coffee at a local coffee shop in his spare time.
