Maya Rudolph Biography

Maya Rudolph is an American actress, comedian, and singer who is best known for appearing on ‘Saturday Night Live’ between 2000 and 2007. She is also known for playing supporting roles in films such as 50 First Dates (2004), A Prairie Home Companion (2006), and Idiocracy (2006).

Maya was inspired by her mother and started making appearances in local theatre during her childhood. As she grew older, Maya started exploring areas, such as acting. Over the course of her career, Rudolph has tried her hand at playing the keyboard, singing, acting, and voice acting.

In her adolescence, Maya attended St. Augustine by the Sea School, where she met her childhood friend, Gwyneth Paltrow. They later became family friends and in 2000, Richard Rudolph and Maya filled the role of music supervisors on the Bruce Paltrow-directed film Duets (2000), which starred Gwyneth.


In 1990, Maya joined the University of California at Santa Cruz, majoring in photography. At the University, she formed the band “Supersauce” with fellow students. Rudolph went on to play keyboards for The Rentals, a Weezer spin-off band, in the mid-1990s and then co-founded Princess, a Prince tribute band.

Maya quit the band after graduating in 1994 and joined The Rentals, a band founded by Weezer bassist Matt Sharp. Maya provided background vocals on the songs “Barcelona” and “My Head is in the Sun” on the 1999 album “Seven More Minutes.” She joined the band on tour, singing backing, and playing the Moog synthesizer. She later opted to follow her ambition of a career in comedy after The Rentals disbanded, joining the renowned ensemble “The Groundlings.”

Maya joined the cast of Saturday Night Live (1975) on May 6, 2000, and quickly rose to become one of the show’s most popular performers. A dead-on impression of fashion superstar Donatella Versace; high school flake “Megan,” the host of her own morning chat show, “Wake-up WakeField”; and a member of the R&B spoof “Gemini’s Twin” are among the most famous sketches.

She co-starred in the 2006 film A Prairie Home Companion, directed by the great Robert Altman and based on Garrison Keillor’s NPR show.
