Paul Michael Hill was a member of the Guildford Four who served a wrongful conviction for the Irish Republican Army (IRA) bombings and the murder of a British soldier, Brian Shaw.
The Guildford Four; Paul Hill, Gerry Conlon, Paddy Armstrong, and Carole Richardson were falsely convicted for a pub bombing in 1974. The Guildford four were tortured and caused to suffer for the crime. They were even pushed to the extend of signing the confessions.
However, two years after the conviction, the IRA’s Balcombe Street gang owned the responsibility for the belongings. To his disadvantage, Paul Hill was given the longest sentence ever handed in an English court. Fortunately, they were released after a worldwide campaign on October 19, 1989, having served 15 years in prison.
In 2005, the four were given an unprecedented apology from the British Prime Minister, David Cameron after spending 15 years in prison and 16 years after release.
The Guildford Four’s tale became the basis of the Oscar-winning movie, In the Name of the Father, featuring Daniel Day-Lewis and Pete Postlethwaite.
