Roz Varon Biography
Roz Varon is an American journalist currently working as a traffic and transportation anchor at ABC 7 Chicago since joining the station in April 1989. She is known to be the first anchor in the country to bring traffic rush hour reporting to the morning news. Varon is a proud graduate of Columbia College, Chicago, where she attended while she worked on-air at the WCRX radio station.
She completed her high school education in 1979 and later attained her Bachelor’s degree in Broadcast Communications from Columbia College.
Varon has currently been working at ABC7 Chicago as a traffic and transportation anchor since April 1989. She not only updates Chicagoans on snarls and travel times, but she also provides extensive coverage of the transportation beat.
Roz is a recipient of multiple Emmy Awards in Traffic Reporting, Specialty Programming, Spot News, and Features. She has also been honored with several Peter Lisagor Awards, one of which she received for her “Weekender” series, a weekly roundup of metro Chicago events. Varon was also recognized as a role model by the Girl Scouts with their “Girls Scouts of the USA Thanks Badge.” Last and not least, She won the Illinois Broadcasters Association’s Silver Dome Award for her breast cancer special, “Faces of Inspiration.”

Recently, Roz published “On the Road with Roz: Adventures in Travel and Life,” a delightful and heartening collection of words and images detailing her travels on Route 66 and around the world with her family. As a breast cancer survivor, Varon works hard to help in heightening cancer prevention and awareness. She is an in-demand motivational speaker, and animal lover, and often volunteers her time to the Anti-Cruelty Society and PAWS Chicago.
Since 2000, Roz has served on the board of Governors of the Chicago/Midwest Chapter of the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences. She is also a member of Television Arts & Sciences and currently serves as a member of the Columbia Alumni Association & Network National Alumni Board (CAAN at Columbia College).
