Pettypiece was born and raised in Lake Orion, Michigan, where she attended and graduated from Lake Orion High School. At the age of five, she began showing horses competitively, and she was involved in 4-H and her high school and college equestrian teams. Later on, she attended the University of Michigan, where she was a reporter and editor for The Michigan Daily, the university’s student-run newspaper.
