William Ruto Biography

William Ruto (born William Kipchirchir Samoei Arap Ruto) is a Kenyan politician who is currently the Kenyan president-elect after the August 9th, 2022 election. Previously, he worked as a vice president in the Uhuru Kenyatta-led government. Ruto served as the acting president of Kenya between 5th and 8th October 2014 when President Uhuru Kenyatta was at the Hague.

Moreover, he has held various high positions prior to his current position. For instance, he has worked with the Ministry of Home Affairs, Ministry of Agriculture, and the Ministry of Higher Education Science and Technology.

During the reign of president MOI, Ruto was the secretary General of KANU while serving as the Member of Parliament for Eldoret North Constituency. This was the period between December 1997 and January 2013. This win came after defeating Reuben Chesire.

In 1998, President Moi appointed him as the Assistant Minister in the office of the President. Moreover, he was promoted to the Minister for Home Affairs in August 2002. Following his performance track, he served as the chairman of the Parliamentary Select Committee on Constitutional Reforms in the 9th Parliament.

On 4th March 2013, William was sworn the Deputy President of Kenya. This was after he and President Uhuru Kenyatta were declared winners of the 2013 Kenyan general elections. The duo won under the Jubilee Alliance ticket, a political party they have majorly sacrificed for.

For clarification, Jubilee Alliance was a coalition of Ruto’s United Republican Party and Kenyatta’s party, The National Alliance.

To the shock of most of his supporters, Ruto was named among the few people to stand for trial at the International Criminal Court. This was a call on allegations of Involvement in Kenya’s 2007-2008 political violence.

However, the Case was withdrawn for lack of sufficient evidence to support the claims. Who knows? Politics is a dirty game as they say.

After their first term was over according to the Kenyan Constitution, the duo went on the ballot once again under the Jubilee Party ticket. In August 2017, Uhuru and Ruto were declared the winners of the election after scooping 54%.

However, the Supreme Court of Kenya nullified the election and fresh elections were done in October 2017. Ironically, the opposition boycotted the election leading to their re-election with 98% of the vote. They were then sworn in as the President and Deputy President for their second term. This is the term they are currently serving up to the next election in 2022.

However, Dr. William Ruto is still eyeing the Kenyan presidential seat in the August 2022 polls. He has already announced his interest in the seat, having already established his political party UDA (United Democratic Party). This party is a split from the ruling party Jubilee.

In an effort to come close to his agenda of becoming the president, Ruto’s party has already been seen merging with other national parties such as ANC of Musalia Mudavadi and Ford Kenya of Wiper.
