André moved to weekday prime-time on May 28, 2007, after nearly 20 years on weekday mornings on weekday mornings. Bernier received his education at New Bedford High School, where he graduated in 1977. He went on to Lyndon State College in Lyndonville, Vermont, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in meteorology in 1981.
During his college years, André founded “The New England Weather Net,” a student-run business that provided daily weather broadcasts by phone to local radio stations (including WSTJ-AM in St. Johnsbury, Vermont).
Bernier’s fascination with meteorology started when he was four years old when he spotted dark clouds from an approaching storm. It was the start of an all-consuming desire to study weather of all kinds, with a particular fondness for winter snowstorms and the well-known “nor’easter” during his formative years in New England.

André began his broadcast career at the age of 16 by providing weekend weather forecasts to his hometown radio station, WBSM-AM.
He polished his skills as a broadcaster while continuing to educate himself in synoptic meteorology (forecasting) by shadowing the late Charlie Taylor, meteorologist for WLNE-TV, whose studios were still located in New Bedford in the 1970s. With the patient help of a number of mentors such as WBSM’s Stann Lipp, Dick Stevens, Jim Loomis, and newsman Jim Phillips (who is still heard on WBSM).
In addition, Bernier left New England after graduating to take his first job as a weekend meteorologist in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, at KGAN, eastern Iowa’s top station at the time (which was known as WMT-AM-FM-TV).
He left Iowa after only eight months to join The Weather Channel, a speculative national cable channel start-up at the time. When The Weather Channel first started airing on Sunday, May 2, 1982, at 8:00 PM EDT, André and Bruce Kalinowski (Edwards) were the first on-camera meteorology team.
Bernier further moved to Minneapolis in 1985, where he worked at WWTC-AM (the first commercial AM radio station in the United States to try an all-weather format), Northwest Airlines (as a trans-Atlantic flight forecaster), and eventually KARE-TV, Minneapolis, where he worked with his wife, Sally, during weekday morning newscasts.
André and his family moved to Cleveland in 1988, and the following year he started working at WJW station 8. He worked as a morning meteorologist until 2007 when he switched to evenings.
