Ivan Watson is an American journalist who is currently working as an international correspondent for CNN based out of Hong Kong. Early in his career, he was a producer for CNN based in Russia and then was a reporter for NPR. Furthermore, he has covered civil unrest in Egypt. Watson graduated from Brown University in 1997 with a degree in international relations.
In addition, he has reported from Moscow and for NPR based in Istanbul, Turkey prior to joining CNN in 2009. In 2000, he reported for NPR in West Africa. He also covered Afghanistan for five years from 2001 during which he was based out of Istanbul, Turkey. However, Watson once found himself caught up in a protest in Turkey and was detained for 30, minutes.
Watson has a Russian Orthodox background. He was a Moscow-based reporter for CNN in the 1990s and has also covered the war in Ukraine. In addition, he was among the four CNN reporters who appeared on the Charlie Rose show to discuss the war in Syria.
