Jim Donovan Biography

Jim Donovan is an American fifteen-time Emmy award-winning journalist who currently anchors CBS 3 Eyewitness News This Morning, the station’s popular morning newscast (weekdays, 4:30–7 a.m.), and CBS 3 Eyewitness News at Noon. Donovan joined CBS 3 in 2004 as its “On Your Side” consumer reporter.

In April 2016, he stepped up to the anchor desk to relaunch the network’s morning newscast, after discerning himself with his notable coverage of Pope Francis’ visit to Philadelphia in 2015. His on-air roles still include the consumer beat, where he and his crew continue to resolve thousands of consumer-related objections from viewers in the Delaware Valley. Their work has garnered awards fromju various organizations, from the Better Business Bureau to the Associated Press.

Donovan kicked off his career as a news department intern at WWOR-TV in Secaucus, New Jersey. For a period of 6 years, he worked in various roles at WWOR, including that of news writer and Emmy-nominated field producer. He did this while also working in the aviation industry.

While in college in the mid-1980s, Donovan was employed by People Express Airlines. He continued working for People Express and later with Continental Airlines, after an air merger, as a domestic and international flight attendant. When he wasn’t serving in the WWOR newsroom, he could most probably be found on a plane traveling to diverse destinations from London to Tahiti.

In 1993, Donovan decided to cut his airline wings and focus on his broadcasting career full-time. He served as a research coordinator at WNBC-TV, the NBC flagship station in New York City. While there, he put his aviation experience to good use and received his first Emmy Award for an investigative report on plane crash survival.

In addition, in 1994, Donovan transitioned to network programming and joined NBC’s cable business network, CNBC. He worked as an investigative producer as well as a consumer reporter for “Steals & Deals,” a nightly consumer news show. While at CNBC, he developed his passion for consumer advocacy, and his work there garnered him a National Cable Ace nomination and enabled him to contribute reports to NBC’s Today Show.

Moreover, in 1997, Donovan left the Big Apple to begin an investigative unit at WGHP-TV, a highly rated Fox television station based in High Point, North Carolina. While working in North Carolina, the Better Business Bureau selected him as an “Outstanding Consumer Reporter.”

One of his most popular reports at WGHP comprised a weekly part where he aided in reuniting people with unclaimed funds. Over the course of one year, he assisted in returning $1.4 million dollars to viewers that were owed money by the North Carolina unclaimed property program.

Furthermore, in 2000, Donovan was recruited by WBNS-TV, the CBS affiliate in Columbus, Ohio. At WBNS, he worked as the station’s lead consumer reporter. He received an Emmy Award and an additional five Emmy nominations for his consumer investigations and reporting. His advocacy on behalf of his viewers was honored by the Ohio Attorney General’s Office.

Additionally, his expertise in consumer matters is now being put to use at KYW-TV, where he created the “3-On Your Side” consumer unit. Every year, he and his crew assist in resolving thousands of consumer-associated complaints from viewers in the Delaware Valley.

Furthermore, his work at KYW has garnered him 13 Emmy Awards and an additional 20 Emmy nominations. After the destruction of Hurricane Katrina, Donovan started a fundraising phone bank. CBS 3 viewers donated over $1 million over the course of 2 days to help with the Red Cross relief effort.

Donovan was born and raised in Staten Island, New York. He attended Seton Hall University in South Orange, New Jersey, where he received a Bachelor of Arts degree in communication. He is also involved in the community, and he volunteers his time to various local charities, including CARIE, MANNA, and the Mazzoni Center. Similarly, he was inducted into the Broadcast Pioneers of Philadelphia’s Hall of Fame in 2015 in honor of his body of work and community service.

During his spare time, Donovan still enjoys traveling the globe. His passport includes stamps from 44 countries in South America, Europe, Asia, America, and the South Pacific. When he is not traveling, he lives in Gloucester County, New Jersey.
