Joanie Lum Biography
Joanie Lum is a well-known American journalist who works as a news anchor and general assignment reporter for Fox 32 News in Chicago, Illinois. Lum became a member of the station’s staff in April 2020. She has more than 20 years of reporting experience for Chicago area stations, most recently serving as a general assignment reporter for WBBM-TV for six years.
Joanie worked for WGN-TV for sixteen years as a general assignment reporter. She spent a year as a reporter, anchor, producer, and weathercaster at WREX-TV in Rockford, Illinois, earlier in her career. She worked as an associate producer at KFVS-TV in Cape Girardeau, Missouri, for a year before that. Joanie’s first broadcasting career was reporting for the student-run, commercially owned KOMU-TV in Columbia, Missouri.
Lum has interviewed a number of notable figures over her career, including His Holiness the Dalai Lama during his travels to Chicago in 1996, 1999, and 2007. She was also a member of the team that won a Chicago Emmy Award for Spot News in 2008 for coverage of the NIU massacres, as well as a National Emmy Award for Outstanding Coverage within a Newscast in 2005 for Farewell to the Pope. She also received two Emmy Awards for her work on the Chicago Marathon broadcasts in 2003 and 2004.
Lum also published a column for the Chicago Tribune called Adventure Shopping with Joanie Lum, which chronicled her experiences hosting the WGN-TV show Around Town from 2001 to 2002.
Joanie has a Bachelor’s degree in Journalism from the University of Missouri in Columbia. She is a past president of the Chicago branch of the Asian American Journalists Association and now serves on the advisory board of the Chinese American Service League, Inc.
