Marc Stein is an American journalist who is currently working as a sports reporter with a newsletter on Substack covering the National Basketball Association. Prior to this, he worked for ESPN and The New York Times.
Stein has also worked for the NBA for more than five years at The Dallas Morning News. He worked first as a Dallas Mavericks beat writer for three seasons from 1997 to 2000. He then worked for two seasons as an NBA columnist. Stein covered the Los Angeles Lakers and Los Angeles Clippers for the Los Angeles Daily News. Stein also worked for The Washington Post, The Orange County Register, and San Bernardino Sun.
Most notably, he began writing for ESPN.com in 2000. Nonetheless, he later signed on full-time in 2002 to serve as the site’s senior NBA writer. He also made regular broadcast appearances as a reporter and analyst for SportsCenter. In October 2016, ESPN signed him to a multi-year contract extension.
However, he was let go from ESPN in 2017. Later in October 2017, Stein became the national NBA writer for The New York Times. He was named the 2019 winner of the Curt Gowdy Media Award for media on February 15, 2019. He was named by the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame.
