Opal Tometi is a Nigerian-American human rights activist, writer, strategist, and community organizer in the United States. She is one of the co-founders of the Black Lives Matter movement. Tometi is also the former executive director of the Black Alliance for Just Immigration, the United States’ first national immigrant rights group for individuals of African heritage, where he worked for nine years in various capacities.
Tometi uses BLM to draw attention to the racist injustices that black people endure. She began her career as a human rights activist and community organizer in her hometown. Opal has advocated for human rights, migrant rights, and racial fairness around the world. She also worked as a case manager for domestic violence survivors.
Opal graduated from the University of Arizona with a bachelor’s degree in public or applied history in 2005. In 2010, she earned a master’s degree in communication studies with a focus on advocacy and rhetoric from Arizona State University. She also received an honorary doctor of science degree from Clarkson University on May 7, 2016.
