Oscar Tshiebwe Biography
Oscar Tshiebwe is a Congolese college basketball player for the Southeastern Conference’s Kentucky Wildcats (SEC). He was previously with the West Virginia Mountaineers.
Tshiebwe grew up in the Democratic Republic of the Congo’s Lubumbashi. He used to play soccer, but due to his above-average height, he was pushed to switch to basketball. Tshiebwe prepared for the race by running on hills and a mountain near his home. Later, he joined a basketball camp run by Bismack Biyombo, a Congolese NBA star who assisted him in furthering his career. Oscar began playing basketball in May 2014.
In November 2015, he moved to the United States, just before the start of his freshman year of high school, and enrolled at Mountain Mission School in Grundy, Virginia. He transferred to Kennedy Catholic High School in Hermitage, Pennsylvania, for his junior year. He took part in the McDonald’s All-American Game and the Nike Hoop Summit, among other events.
Oscar was also rated as a five-star recruit by Rivals and 247 Sports, as well as a four-star recruit by ESPN. He committed to play college basketball in West Virginia on October 20, 2018.
Oscar is a West Virginia College alumnus. His team won MVP honors in the Cancun Challenge title game. On December 2, 2019, he was named Big 12 Newcomer of the Week. Tshiebwe was chosen to the Second Team All-Big 12 and the All-Newcomer Team at the end of the regular season.
He transferred to Kentucky on January 10, 2021, after considering Miami, NC State, and Illinois. Tshiebwe was selected as the Sporting News National Player of the Year and the unanimous Southeastern Conference Player of the Year at the end of the season.
