Shiv Nadar is a prominent Indian industrialist and entrepreneur, best known for founding HCL Technologies Limited, a global IT services company. He transformed the IT hardware company into an IT enterprise later on.
Nadar began his career at Walchand Group’s Cooper Engineering in Pune in 1967. However, his entrepreneurial spirit led him to venture out on his own. In the mid-1970s, along with a group of partners, he started a company that would eventually become HCL in a small Delhi rooftop room, initially focusing on making calculators and microprocessors.
Later in 1976, Nadar founded Hindustan Computers Limited (HCL) with a vision to create a global technology firm. Initially, HCL focused on the hardware sector, producing the country’s first indigenous computers and pushing the limits of what was possible in the technology space in India.
By the 1980s, HCL had begun to expand beyond the Indian market, venturing into Singapore and eventually establishing a presence in other countries. The 1990s saw a significant shift with the formation of HCL Technologies, focusing on IT and software services, which would grow to become one of the largest IT services firms in the world. However, later in July 2020, he handed over to his daughter Roshni Nadar. She became the first woman chair of a listed Indian IT company.
