Daniel Stewart Butterfield also known as Dharma Jeremy Butterfield is a Canadian billionaire businessman. He is co-founding both the photo-sharing website Flickr and the team-messaging application Slack. In 2021 the software company Salesforce acquired Slack in a deal that was valued at about $28 billion. Jeremy was born and raised in Lund, British Columbia, Canada.

Butterfield graduated from the St. Michaels University School in Victoria, British Columbia, and made money in university designing websites. After that, he received a Bachelor’s degree in philosophy from the University of Victoria. Steward also holds a Master of Philosophy from Clare College, Cambridge. Soon after graduating from University, Daniel was hired and worked together with Jason Classon to build a startup titled Gradfinder.com. After that, worked as a freelance web designer and also created a contest called the 5K competition, centered on people with the ability to design websites under 5 kilobytes.

In 2002, he alongside Caterina Fake and Jason Classon co-founded the Ludicorp company. The company grew day by day and eventually become a multiplayer online role-playing game called Game Neverending. After that, they launched a photo-sharing website entitled Flickr. In 2005, Ludicorp was acquired by Yahoo!, however, Butterfield continued to work as the General Manager of Flickr until he left Yahoo! on July 2008.

A few months later, he co-founded a new project called Tiny Speck. The company set up its first project, a multiplayer game Gitch however it was later closed up after it failed to attract sufficient audience. Two years later, Butterfield launched Slack, an instant-message-based team communication tool, built by Tiny Speck. Within six months the tool had over 16,000 users who were registered. At the end of 2015, Slack had raised US$340 million in venture capital and had more than 2 million daily active users.

That same year, it was named the company of the year by the Magazine. Recently, Butterfield announced his departure as CEO of Slack and left Salesforce early in January 2023. Furthermore, he has been awarded many accolades and awards including Businessweek’s “Top 50” Leaders in the entrepreneur category. Stewart was also named in the “Time 100”, Time magazine’s list of the 100 most influential people in the world. In 2017, he was featured in Masters of Scale, a podcast series by Reid Hoffman, co-founder of Linkedin, along with other successful businesspeople such as Mark Zuckerberg.
