Dr. Deborah Birx Biography
Dr. Deborah Birx is an American physician and diplomat currently working as the United States Global AIDS Coordinator for Presidents Barrack Barack Obama and Donald Trump since 2004.
Since the outbreak of Coronavirus in 2020, Birx has been working as the COronavirus Response Coordinator for the White House Coronavirus Task Force. Deborah specializes in HIV/AIDS immunology, vaccine research, and global health. In addition, she was responsible for the President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief Program in 65 countries supporting HIV/AIDS treatment and prevention programs.
Deborah was born in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, and later joined Lampeter-Strasburg High School. As she grew up alongside her siblings, they used a shed behind their family home as a makeshift lab for experiments in astronomy, geology, biology, biology occasionally making homemade satellite dish antennas mounted on roller skates.
In her second year of study, Birx won third place at the Lancaster City-County Science Fair. Furthermore, she was featured in a front-page story in the Lancaster New Era with the subhead: Girls Sweep Top 3 Prizes.
In addition, Birx completed her International Science and Engineering Fair in San Diego. Her family then relocated letting her join Carlisle High for her final year of High School. In her final year, Deborah completed at the Capital Area Science Fair and was awarded the Grand Prize.

Later in 1991, she received a BS in chemistry from Houghton College later completing her undergraduate studies in two years. In 1980, Birx got an MD from the Hershey Medical Center, Pennsylvania State University.
Between 1980-1994, Birx was working as an active duty reserve officer in the United States Army. She immediately assumed a role as an active duty regular Army, rising to the rank of a Colonel.
From 1980-1989. Deborah worked as a physician at the Walter Reed Army Medical Center. This was after she completed a one-year internship in 1981 and an additional two-year residency in internal medicine. Furthermore, she completed two fellowships in clinical immunology in the areas of allergies and diagnostics between 1983 and 1986. All this time, she was based in Antony Fauci’s Lab.
Between 1985 and 1989, Birx made a breakthrough to her current position by first serving as the assistant chief of the Water Reed Allergy/Immunology Service. She then began her career as a clinician in immunology, eventually focusing on HIV/AIDS vaccine research.
From 1986-1989, Deborah served at the National Institutes of Health as an investigator specializing in cellular immunology. She then made a return to Walter Reed in 1989, where she worked in the Department of Retroviral Research up to 1995. She first started as an assistant chief and then as chief of the division. Moreover, Birx worked as a lab director in HIV-1 Vaccine Development for a year.

From 1996, Birx served as the Director of the United States Military HIV Research Program at the Walter Reed Army Institute of Research, a position she held for nine years. While serving in the position, she led the HIV vaccine clinical trial of RV 144, the first supporting evidence of any vaccine being effective in lowering the risk of contracting HIV.
From 2005 to 2014, he worked as the director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s Division of Global HIV/AIDS (DGHA). This is part of the agency’s Center for Global Health. In January 2014, President Barack Obama appointed Birx as the Ambassador at Large and U.S. Global AIDS Coordinator as part of the President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) program.
She was later confirmed by the Senate via a voice note on April 2, 2014, assuming a role two days later. Furthermore, Birx outlined her role as ambassador to help meet the HIV prevention and treatment targets set by Obama in 2015 to end the AIDS epidemic by 2030. To steer the program, Deborah created a program called DREAMS (Determined, Resilient, Empowered, AIDS-free, Mentored, and Safe. This is a public-private partnership focusing on reducing infection rates in adolescent populations.
As her major achievement, Vice President Mike Pence appointed Birx to the position of White House Coronavirus Response Coordinator. This was a task given to her on February 27, 2020, requiring her to report to Pence on the White House Coronavirus Task Force.
