Kirk Franklin Biography
Kirk Franklin is a famous American choir director, songwriter, and gospel singer best known for his urban contemporary gospel choir songs. Some of his great projects are, God’s property, One Nation Crew, among many others.
In addition, Kirk won several awards including 15 Grammy Awards. Franklin is often titled the “ruling King of Urban Gospel”. Born in Fort Worth, Texas, Franklin was brought up by his aunt, Gertrude after his mother abandoned him as a baby. She recycled aluminum cans to put food on the table and also earn little for Kirk to have piano lessons from the age of four.
At the age of 7, Franklin received his first contract to record, a chance his aunt turned down. He then joined the church choir and became music director of the Mt. Rose Baptist adult choir at the tender age of eleven.

However, he rebelled during his teenage despite his spiritual upbringing. In an effort to keep him off trouble, his grandma organized an audition for him at a professional youth conservatory associated with a local University. Kirk was accepted but had to deal with a girlfriend’s pregnancy later leading to his expulsion from school for ill behavior.
It is also evident that Kirk studied music with Jewell Kelly and the Singing Chaparrals at Oscar Dean Wyatt High School. Due to his self-drive and passion, Frank ultimately became the pianist for the choir.
At the age of 15, Kirk turned back to the church where he directed the church choir. He also established a gospel group, The Humble Hearts, a group that recorded one of Franklin’s compositions. This got the attention of many in the gospel industry including the gospel music legend, Milton Bigham, the musical director of the Georgia Mass Choir.
