Michael Phelps Biography

Michael Phelps is an American swimmer best recognized as the most decorated athlete in Olympic history with 28 medals inclusive of 23 gold medal records. During the 2008 Games in Beijing, Phelps became the first athlete to win eight gold medals in a single Olympics.

Born in Baltimore, Maryland, and raised in Rodgers Forge, Towson, Michael attended Rodgers Forge Elementary, moved to Dumbarton Middle School, and then Towson High School.

He began swimming at the age of seven partially under the influence of his sisters and partially as a workout plan. By the age of 10, Phelps held a national record for his age group in the 100-meter butterfly contest. Afterward, he began training at the North Baltimore Aquatic Club under coach Bob Bowman.

Soon after, his coach realized his talent and fierce sense of competition later launching an immense training regime together. By 1999, David had made it to the United States National Team B.

He then followed his coach, Bowman to the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor where he coached the Wolverines swim team in sports marketing and management. At the same time, she continued to establish world records at the 2006 Pan Pacific Championships in Victoria, British Columbia. Later in 2007, Phelps pursued the 2007 World Championships in Melbourne, Australia.

In 2000, Michael became the youngest American male swimmer to compete at an Olympic Games in 68 years when he was just 15 years old. However, he did not win a medal at the Summer Olympics in Sydney, Australia, but the experience impacted him for future contests.

In the spring of 2001, Michael broke his first world record in the 200-meter butterfly contest. This crowned him the youngest male swimmer in history to ever set a world record in swimming. In the same year, he broke his own record at the World Championships in Fukuoka, Japan, recording a time of 1:54:58. This claimed his first international medal.

In 2002, he went on to set new marks at the United States Summer Nationals in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. In this contest, he established a new world record for the 400-meter individual medley. Similarly, he held the U.S record for the 100-meter butterfly and the 200-meter individual medley. Later in 2003, Mike broke his own record in the 400-meter individual medley with a time of 4:09:09.

After graduating in 2003 from Towson University, 17-year old Michael set five world records starting with the 200-meter individual medley at the World Championships in Barcelona, Spain. He followed during the U.S. trial for the 2004 Summer Olympics, breaking his own world record again for the 400-meter individual medley with a time of 4:08:41.

He did super well over the years. In the 2012 Olympics held in London, Michael’s Olympic medal count was raised to 22. In the same year, he temporarily retired from swimming. However, he mentioned a possibility to return in July 2013.

On June 29, 2016, Michael celebrated a huge comeback after featuring as the first American male swimmer to earn a spot on five Olympic teams. In the same year, on August 7, Mike clinched his 19th Olympic gold medal in Rio swimming the second leg of the men’s 400 freestyle relay.

However, after the competition, Phelps went for his retirement citing that he had always lived a dream come true and it was his time to rest. This was after 24 years in the sport.
